Fit in Faith | Honoring God With Our Strength

Let’s take a moment to reframe the way we think about fitness. What if your workout wasn’t just about getting toned arms or managing blood pressure? What if it was worship?

As we mature in years, and in faith, our approach to health should grow with us. Physical activity isn’t just about aesthetics or weight. It’s about honoring the bodies God has entrusted to us and offering them back to Him, in strength and in service.

The apostle Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 9:26-27 (ESV),

“So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.”
That’s the mindset of an athlete, and a believer. Discipline isn’t punishment. It’s purpose.

Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20), and like any sacred space, it deserves attention, care, and reverence. You were bought with a price and your life matters. Your breath is borrowed. Each heartbeat is a gift. So let your movement become an act of thanksgiving.

Romans 12:1 reminds us to

“present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.”
That includes our physical health. We can’t separate our faith from our physicality. If God says “Go,” we want to be ready, just like an athlete trains to pivot, to endure, and to finish well.

That’s the heart behind Empower75 ~ a 75-day transformational journey that challenges us to take care of mind, body, and spirit. Within that journey, fitness isn’t just about hitting step goals or burning calories. It’s about showing up consistently, intentionally, and with reverence. It’s about creating habits that align with God’s call on our lives and being ready to serve with strength.

How to Get Fit in Faith

1. Begin with Purpose
Before you even lace up your sneakers, take a moment to pray. Dedicate your workout to the Lord. Ask Him to renew your strength, physically and spiritually.

2. Warm Up and Stretch
Gentle stretching prepares your muscles and joints for movement and reduces the risk of injury. It’s a beautiful parallel to prayer and meditation, preparing the heart before action.

3. Cardio that Moves the Soul
Power walking, jump rope, swimming, cycling—these are excellent ways to strengthen your heart and boost endurance. As you move, reflect on Mark 12:30:

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.”
Movement becomes an expression of love.

4. Build Strength to Serve
Incorporate light weights, resistance bands, or bodyweight exercises. Strength training improves bone density, increases energy, and reminds us that we are “being built up in Him” (Colossians 2:7). Strong bodies support strong service.

5. Don’t Skip the Cool Down
End with gentle movement and stretching to restore calm and help your body recover. Use this moment to thank God for the ability to move, to breathe, and to live. Let gratitude anchor your efforts.

A Fit Life is a Faithful Life

Exercise isn’t about punishing yourself or chasing perfection. It’s about stewarding the gift of life. You are not your own, you were bought with a price (1 Corinthians 6:20). So glorify God in your body. Let your movement reflect His grace.

Through Empower75, I’ve watched women and men across the country embrace this truth. They’ve stacked habits, shown up for themselves, and grown spiritually and physically in ways that are lasting. And here’s the beautiful part: you don’t need perfection to begin. You just need willingness.

So whether you're lifting weights, walking the neighborhood, or stretching in the quiet of your living room, remember this: every move is a form of worship. Every drop of sweat is an offering. You are not just getting fit, you are aligning your life with God’s plan, one faithful step at a time.

Let’s be found ready. Let’s be fit. Let’s be faithful. Let’s move forward…body, mind, and spirit.
