“In the same way that nursing infants cry for milk, you must intensely crave the pure spiritual milk of God’s Word. For this ‘milk’ will cause you to grow into maturity, fully nourished and strong for life.” – 1 Peter 2:2 TPT
Have you ever paused to ask yourself, Am I really growing spiritually—or just going through the motions?
Spiritual growth is like nourishment for the soul. Just as our physical bodies need daily food to survive, our spirits crave the Word of God to thrive. In 1 Peter 2:2, we’re reminded that this craving is meant to be intense—like a newborn crying out for milk. It’s not optional. It’s essential.
And here’s the truth: spiritual maturity doesn’t happen by accident. Bishop T.D. Jakes said it best in his book Nothing Just Happens—we have to be intentional. Growth doesn’t come from occasional devotionals or half-listening to sermons while multitasking. It comes from craving, seeking, meditating, and applying God’s Word consistently.
Why does this matter? Spiritual growth impacts every area of our lives.
It shapes how we handle conflict, how we love others, how we show up in our purpose, and how we respond when life gets hard. When we grow spiritually, we grow emotionally, mentally, relationally, and even professionally. The Word strengthens us from the inside out.
And it’s not about being perfect—it’s about being committed.
Here are a few small steps to build your spiritual growth rhythm:
Begin your day with one scripture and reflect on it throughout the day
Use sticky notes or your phone to keep God’s promises in front of you
Journal your prayers and note how God is answering over time
Surround yourself with people who value God’s Word and hold you accountable
