Practical and Spiritual Tools for Discerning God's Voice
Let’s face it, our world is loud. Notifications, news cycles, to-do lists, voices of others, and even our own inner chatter compete for attention. But in the middle of the chaos, there is still a gentle, steady voice that wants to be heard. The voice of God.
Jesus said, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me” (John 10:27 AMP). He didn’t say we might hear, He said we do. The real question is: are we quiet enough to recognize Him?
God is speaking. Revelation 3:20 (TPT) paints a clear picture of this: “I’m standing at the door, knocking. If your heart is open to hear My voice and you open the door within, I will come in to you and feast with you, and you will feast with Me.” The invitation is ongoing. But tuning in takes intention. Just like we train our physical ears to hear certain sounds, such as a baby’s cry, a loved one’s voice, our spiritual ears must be trained too.
Here’s what I’ve learned: quiet is the think tank of the soul. God often speaks loudest when we’re quietest.
Why We Need to Hear His Voice
We aren’t meant to navigate life on our own wisdom. Isaiah 30:21 (NKJV) says, “Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, ‘This is the way, walk in it,’ whenever you turn to the right hand or whenever you turn to the left.” That kind of clarity and direction? It only comes from being in tune with Him.
Jesus made it plain in John 8:47 (ESV): “Whoever is of God hears the words of God.” When we belong to Him, we learn to discern when He’s speaking, through Scripture, the Holy Spirit, wise counsel, or even a whisper to our heart.
How Do We Cultivate Stillness?
Create a quiet space. It doesn’t have to be fancy, just consistent. Mornings before the world wakes, car rides without music, or even a walk in nature.
Spend time in the Word. The Bible is God’s written voice. The more we know it, the more we’ll recognize when He’s speaking.
Practice listening prayer. Don’t just talk, pause. Ask God a question… then wait for His response.
Journal what you sense. Writing helps us clarify and reflect. Often, what feels faint becomes clear when we put pen to paper.
Saturate your spirit with truth. Books like Whisper by Mark Batterson and Discerning the Voice of God by Priscilla Shirer can sharpen your spiritual hearing.
Final Thoughts
The goal isn’t just to hear God, it’s to really know Him. To walk with Him. To be transformed by every word He speaks. He’s not far off, waiting for you to get everything right. He’s near. He’s knocking.
So today, be still. Turn down the volume on everything else. Ask, “Lord, what are You saying to me right now?”
And believe me…He will answer.
“The more familiar you become with the voice of God, the easier it is to recognize when He is speaking.” ~ Priscilla Shirer
